I have fond memories of traveling as a child, even though our family vacations were never more exotic than Niagara Falls and Michigan. As an adult, I lived in Spain for four years while serving in the U.S. military, an eye-opening experience that allowed me to travel around Europe and see fascinating cultures, get different perspectives and encounter places I had only read about in books. Eventually, when I sat down and thought seriously about the best profession for me, I decided I wanted to work in travel. Not only is travel an integral part of my past, but it’s something that makes people happy. In fact, there’s nothing more joyful than planning -- and taking -- vacations.
Clearly, all paths led me to travel consulting, which I’ve been doing since 1991. Why do I like my job? Because everyone needs to escape and relax now and then, and helping clients do that is fun. Some people go online and book that well-needed getaway on their own, but without the talents of an experienced advisor, they won’t know for sure if it's the right trip for them. Even if clients can’t always afford their dream vacation, I welcome the challenge of helping them get as close to their goal as possible. It’s incredibly rewarding for me when clients tell me that their trip was perfect. And, often, they come back and ask me to help them plan another one.
Since I love being on the sea, putting together cruise trips for clients is particularly enjoyable. Cruising is such a versatile type of vacation, although it’s important to remember that it’s not for everyone. Clients who want to spend all their time visiting museums wouldn’t be good cruise candidates. Other people, like me, don’t care where the ship sails, because the vessel itself is the vacation, with so much offered onboard. I also love organizing honeymoons. I make sure to consider a couple’s interests, budget and schedule before finding a satisfying common denominator among all the factors. Everyone has that little fairy tale in the back of their heads as to their ideal honeymoon, and bringing their dreams to reality is at once challenging and satisfying for me.
From Tahiti to Hawaii, when I go on my own travels, everything I do is a learning experience that helps me with my job. I make mental notes in order to expand my horizons and share that wisdom with my clients. My favorite vacation is usually the last one I took, because it’s the freshest in my memory, and it makes me want to hit the road.
