When I was growing up, my parents piqued my curiosity about travel by taking me to Puerto Vallarta and Hawaii, after which I was eager to see much more of the world. From then on, different people, lifestyles and cultures always held a strong appeal to me. Now, after 22 years as a travel consultant, I have had wonderful opportunities to visit fabulous destinations. In Australia, for instance, I snorkeled on the Great Barrier Reef, and touched koalas and kangaroos at a remarkable zoo. In New Zealand, I went ice hiking on a glacier, rode in a helicopter to the top of snow-capped peaks and experienced the thrilling Shotover Jet Boat ride along a rushing river. There’s always another must-see place on my list of destinations, so I try to go somewhere new rather than revisiting places I’ve already seen.
As a travel consultant, it’s crucial for me to find out what my clients are hoping to see and do, whether they crave peace and quiet or on-the-go activities. Through enjoyable conversations, I learn about where they have stayed in the past so I know what type of accommodations to suggest to them. When I’ve been to a place they’re asking about, I tell them about my own impressions, making sure to provide them with the cons as well as the pros. The more I can share with them about the people, the food and hotels of a destination, the better their trip becomes once they embark on it.
I’m very detail-oriented, making sure to take care of everything concerning my client’s itineraries and reservations. I try to take as many destination courses as possible, and I read online travel magazines that are updated daily so I’m on top of what’s happening around the world. As I bring all of these skills to the table, I hope to spread that same sense of curiosity about travel that my parents instilled in me years ago.
